The Geographic Gazetteer of the Official Toponymics of the Principality of Asturias (NGTOPA) is a dynamic registry that not only collects the official names of the geographically referenced population entities, but also codifies them, spatially hierarchizes and categorizes them.
This is an ambitious project that has involved a significant effort for the General Directorate of Urban Planning, which was faced with the geolocation and territorial organization of almost 24,000 official place names, distributed throughout the entire Asturian territory. To date, it has been necessary to travel 61,672 km (one and a half times around the world) and 268 days of work have been invested in towns, parishes and town councils, where dozens and dozens of collaborators and informants have participated (town councils, associations locals, private individuals and scholars of the subject, etc.). However, the project is still in development, with the georeferencing of all official place names referring to the 74 councils that have standardized place names expected to be completed this year.
This new cartographic product has been incorporated into the SITPA-IDEAS platform through the publication of a specific viewer and the deployment of OGC Services, as well as the making available of the NGTOPA in different formats from the Download Center.
